Bhubaneswar: The importance of pharmacists in the health system was highlighted at an event to celebrate World Pharmacists Day at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital on Sunday.
“Pharmacists play a vital role in the healthcare system and played a huge role in treating patients when the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world,” said Vice President of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA ), Saswati Das, who was the guest chef.
Praising them for their hard fight against the pandemic, she said pharmacists must come together to ensure a healthier world.
World Pharmacists Day is celebrated annually on September 25 – the day of the founding of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) – as decided by the World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Istanbul in 2009.
The Vice Chancellor of SOA, Prof. Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, who was the keynote speaker, said that the pharmacist is one of the pillars of the healthcare system.
Describing ‘Veda’ as the oldest science, Professor Mahapatra said that Ayurveda is part of ‘Atharba Veda’, which was written in 2800 BC. J.-C., adding that the world today needs a lot of research so that new drugs can be invented to fight against new diseases. .
“While three-quarters of TB patients globally were in India, many of those afflicted were suffering from drug-resistant TB for which new drugs need to be invented,” he said.
Professor Sudam Chandra Si, Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPS) at SOA, developed the theme for this year’s World Pharmacists Day — Unite in Action for a Healthier World.
Prof. (Dr) Sanghamitra Mishra, Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital, described pharmacy as a 24×7 emergency service while observing that pharmacists play an important role in critical care.
Prof. (Dr) Pusparaj Samantasinhar, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, also praised the contribution of pharmacists to the healthcare sector.
Dr. Jasmin Panda, head of the pharmacy department, led the pharmacists to take the oath.
Eight pharmacists, chosen as employees of the year for 2021-2022, were congratulated during the program, which was jointly organized by SOA Pharmacy and SUM Pharmacy in collaboration with the Odisha State branch of the Indian Association of hospital pharmacists (IHPA) and the NSS unit of SPS.
Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions held earlier, including rangoli, mehendi, essay writing and a cricket match between pharmacists.
