As the holiday season approaches, Pastor Timothy McCracken shares the story of young Havilah, the only child of a shepherd family on the outskirts of Bethlehem, around the time of Christ’s birth, in his first children’s book, “A Gift for Havilah”. Havilah is bright, confident and full of hope. Throughout this Bible-based book, McCracken takes readers on their exploration of the faith experience of the various characters.
Every year, Havilah’s father and his uncles have to take their sheep to the fields southeast of his home in Bethlehem. There, the shepherds stay all night to watch over the flocks because there are no enclosures. Year after year, Havilah watched them go and always wanted to go. The work of a young shepherdess is very real and difficult, but she has waited for it with unquenchable impatience. The story also centers on Havilah’s struggling mother, Naomi, who, due to a tragedy, is in dire need of reassurance in her faith. Readers will follow, waiting for a ray of hope.
Throughout this inspiring Christmas tale, McCracken points out how the coming of Jesus was predicted, people fearful that God will not keep His promises will find that He does, and ultimately readers will find trust in Jesus Christ. as their hope and their Savior.
“I love the way a message can be delivered to the heart through a play,” McCracken said. “When I was writing a Christmas play for our church, the story naturally revolved around the people waiting for the coming of the Messiah. Since then, the idea of creating a children’s book on the same theme has taken hold.
With “A Gift for Havilah,” McCracken hopes that the faith of youth, parents, and all readers will be strengthened in knowing that the coming of Christ has been truly foretold. Through this imaginative family book, based on real people and situations in the Scriptures, the author encourages young readers to reflect on the hope and faith experience of the gospel.
