Rangers set to take inspiration from ex-World Cup winner’s ‘third class team’ jibe

Former Germany captain and World Cup winner Lothar Matthäus has branded Rangers a ‘third-class team’ after the Ibrox side’s sensational Europa League win over Borussia Dortmund in playoffs.

Matthäus wrote in his Sky Sports Germany column and slammed Borussia Dortmund over the past few weeks and the result against Rangers was seemingly the straw that broke the camel’s back, with the German legend launching a scathing attack from the German side.

Criticizing Rangers is a step too far, especially considering we scored 6 goals over the two legs, and it wasn’t just a scrappy win by an odd goal.

German football icon Lothar Matthäus blasts Rangers after Europa League triumph

My Europa League predictions.

Matthäus began his attack on Dortmund by explaining that they had failed in three cup competitions this season, before targeting Rangers.

“Now the next low point in the Europa League, the end against third-class side Glasgow Rangers,” said Matthäus {SkySportsGermany].

“In Scotland, by the way, Rangers are second to Celtic.

“And they failed in the Conference League against Norway’s FK Bodo/Glimt, well…”

Those comments hardly cry respect for the Scottish champions, especially showing up in Germany and beating Dortmund in their backyard.

Perhaps he should have done more research before writing his column, as there is a real title race going on in Scotland, unlike Germany.

The lack of respect the club receives with Scotland for our European exploits is shocking and hopefully can prove an inspiration to players and staff in the future as we aim to do the Europa League quarter-finals for the first time since 2008.

I would love to see what Matthäus would write if we continued our amazing journey.

Meanwhile, Rangers Euro rivals Red Star Belgrade warmed up for next week’s Ibrox showdown with an emphatic league win.
