Senior Turkish politician reiterates importance of Caucasus cooperation

A senior Turkish politician on Thursday reiterated the importance of cooperation in the Caucasus.

What is needed is cooperation instead of competition, said Justice and Development Party (AK) vice chairman Binali Yildirim in a speech at the 8th World Forum in Baku in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku.

Noting that the Karabakh issue was recently resolved thanks to the successful campaign of the Azerbaijani army which ended nearly 30 years of Armenian occupation, he encouraged advanced regional cooperation.

Such an initiative would include Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, Russia and Iran as well as countries east of the Caspian Sea, he added.

Yildirim highlighted the presence of opportunities and infrastructure to advance regional cooperation and pointed out that the Baku-Tbilisi Railway, Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Oil Pipeline and Southern Corridor projects can be used jointly by governments. countries of the Caucasus, Central Asia and Europe.

He spoke of Turkey’s central role in regional developments and noted Ankara’s efforts to end conflicts in Syria, Libya, Yemen and Afghanistan.

He also highlighted the contributions aimed at improving prosperity, peace and cooperation in the Caucasus.

Regarding the coronavirus pandemic, Yildirim called for global action and solidarity to overcome the economic difficulties that have arisen in the post-pandemic world.
